When pruning trees with regard to tree health, specific goals should be set with regard to a specific plant. For instance, we commonly recommend pruning oak trees to remove dead, diseased, or broken branches to a certain specification such as one inch in diameter and larger. In addition to this, some canopy raising may be necessary, but the interior foliage including sprouts should be left intact as a general rule. If you wanted to remove sprouts from the lower stem of a tree, keep it minimal and remain below six feet high on the stem.
