Needlecast - Spring Disease News

Infection occurs in spring through summer. Yellowing of needles occurs in mid to late summer on first year or older needles. Black spore producing structures can be observed on the lower surface of infected needles.

Fireblight - Disease News

Fireblight disease is most severe during warm, moist springs and on poorly drained sites. The most characteristic and easily observed symptoms are wilting and blackening or browning of the blossoms and leaves on the terminal shoots. The affected plant parts remain attached to the terminal and appear as though scorched by fire. A brown ooze develops then at the site of these cankers.

Cottony Camellia Scale - Pest/Insect News

Cottony Camellia Scale is a soft scale that feeds mostly on camellia, holly, yew, euonymus, and maple. Eggs are laid in April, May, and early June. These eggs hatch and crawlers become active in May-June. In late summer, crawlers migrate to twigs where they overwinter. Yellow flecks on upper leaf surfaces, honeydew, and sooty mold on leaves are characteristics to look out for!

Bacterial Leaf Scorch

Bacterial Leaf Scorch (BLS) is a systemic disease which invades the xylem (water and nutrient conducting tissues) of susceptible trees. Leaves emerge apparently healthy in the spring but with the onset of hot, dry weather, symptoms develop rapidly during July and August. The leaf scorch progresses inward from the margin and results in premature defoliation across all tree species.

Crticial Care for Trees

Now is the most critical time of year to prepare your trees and shrubs for the coming summer. This season brings everything from high temperatures to severe storms. Healthy trees are better able to withstand these extremes so trees should be inspected.

Flowering Cherry

The flowering cherry tree is a welcome sign of spring. Over two hundred species exist, most of which are fully hardy to frosts. It requires full sun and well-drained soil. Cherry trees are easily damaged by planting too deeply or by allowing mulch to remain against the lower trunk. They respond well to fertilization which helps keep the trees growing vigorously and able to resist pest problems.

Just wanted to let you know what a good job the Bartlett crew did here yesterday - left their work sites squeaky clean - did a terrific job of shaping the flowering cherry on the front lawn--even though it's not in bloom yet, its skeleton looks beautiful now with all the dead wood and extraneous branches removed. Please pass along our thanks and compliments to your crew.
Carol J., Huntingdon Valley, Pa.
