Proper Mulching

Proper Mulching

Mulching is one of the most beneficial practices a homeowner can use for better tree health. Some of the benefits of proper mulching include reducing soil moisture loss, helps control weed germination and growth and insulates soil which protects roots from extreme summer and winter temperatures. As beneficial as mulch is, too much can be harmful. The biggest mistake people make when mulching is piling it against stems of trees and shrubs. These excessive piles of mulch materials are known as “mulch volcanoes.” This practice is so common in some regions that homeowners and some professionals think this is acceptable and even desirable. Stem tissues are not intended to remain constantly moist from mulch accumulation. Insect and disease infestations, as well as stem girdling roots, often develop on trees with excessive mulching.

Boxwood Blight

Boxwood Blight

The majority of diseased Boxwood samples that are submitted to Bartlett's diagnostic lab are maintained by shearing, rather than pruning. Shearing results in dense outer growth that can encourage disease development once the pathogen is introduced. Shearing in summer can promote new infections if the tools are contaminated or low levels of disease are already present within the planting. Pruning, rather than shearing, is an integral part of managing Boxwood blight.

  • Tick Management

Given the likelihood of encountering ticks, it is important to know that controlling tick populations in your landscape is possible. The first step is assessing your landscape for common habitats like wooded areas, leaf litter, and ornamental beds. Based on the assessment, treatments can specifically target at-risk areas.
