Japanese Beetles

The adult Japanese beetle is a serious pest of shade trees, ornamental shrubs and vines, and many garden plants. The beetles feed on the upper surface of tree leaves, chewing out the tissue between the veins and leaving a lace-like skeleton. The injured leaves eventually turn brown and premature defoliation may occur. Request an Inspection today!

Learn More About The

This species is easily confused with some of our native species that have compound leaves and numerous leaflets, such as staghorn sumac, black walnut, and hickory. The leaf edges of these native trees all have teeth, called serrations, while those of tree-of-heaven are smooth. The foul odor produced by the crushed foliage and broken twigs is also unique to tree-of-heaven.

Summer Tree Threats

Summer is a time of high activity for pests as well as tree diseases caused by fungi and other organisms. Some problems may be simply aesthetic, while others can be a real threat to tree health and vitality. As such, it is important to have an arborist inspect your trees to determine the underlying cause.

Cottony Camellia Scale

Cottony Camellia Scale is a soft scale that feeds mostly on Camellia, Holly, Yew, Euonymus, and Maple. Eggs are laid in April, May, and early June. These eggs hatch and crawlers become active in May-June. In late summer, crawlers migrate to twigs where they overwinter. Yellow flecks on upper leaf surfaces, honeydew, and sooty mold on leaves are characteristics to look out for!

Euonymus Scale

Euonymus scale is a piercing, sucking insect that wreaks havoc on the Euonymus species. Left uncontrolled, this pest can kill sections of Euonymus ground covers and ornamental plantings. Detection and timing are crucial for controlling this pest. Treatments should be applied during the spring months when the insect crawlers are feeding. Act now to protect your Euonymus against this prevalent pest.

FIREBLIGHT - DISEASE NEWS

Fireblight disease is most severe during warm, moist springs and on poorly drained sites. The most characteristic and easily observed symptoms are wilting, and blackening or browning of the blossoms and leaves on the terminal shoots. The affected plant parts remain attached to the terminal and appear as though scorched by fire. A brown ooze develops then at the site of these cankers.

A Buried Root Collar Can Harm Your Tree

How do the roots look on your tree? Can you see the root flare? Trees are much healthier when excess mulch and soil are clear of root and trunk tissue.

Planting Trees for Arbor Day

We enjoyed spending Arbor Day planting trees with the students at Step Empowers Head Start.

Are Your Trees Blocking a Great View?

If the trees between your deck or windows are blocking a great view, consider vista pruning. This involves removing live branches that are blocking the view, and retaining the rest of the tree for screening.

Bartlett Inventory Solutions

Bartlett Inventory Solutions (BIS) is a proactive landscape management service that provides a professional inventory and assessment of every tree on a property. Tree inventories give fundamental information on tree quantities, location, condition and size, as well as plant health care recommendations and maintenance requirements.

Tick Management

Given the likelihood of encountering ticks, it is important to know that controlling tick populations in your landscape is possible. The first step is assessing your landscape for common habitats like wooded areas, leaf litter and ornamental beds. Based on the assessment, treatments can specifically target at-risk areas.
