Crabapple Tree

Crabapples are a popular tree for suburban landscapes with more than 400 varieties available. In many areas, the most common disease is apple scab, caused by a fungus. The appearance of dull smoky areas on the new leaves is the first evidence of the disease. The best prevention of apple scab is planting resistant varieties. If not available, a protective spray program should begin at bud break.

When to Prune Hydrangea

Few blooms provide more showy appeal than hydrangeas. Hydrangea is a plant that produces blooms on one year old growth and this must be kept in mind when pruning. The best time to prune is just after blooms fade in mid-July to August. This allows the plant to produce some new vegetative growth before winter dormancy and it will be on this growth that flower buds are produced.

Prepare trees for spring

After winter ends, your trees and shrubs will be working hard to establish spring growth. A soil test in early spring can help determine the precise nutrients needed for that growth, yielding a fuller canopy and vibrant, health foliage.

Spring Tree Planting

If planting trees this spring, be sure the root flare is visible and soil/mulch are not piled against the trunk. If placed against the tree, mulch can keep moisture levels high on the bark and promote fungal pathogens. One of the best mulch materials to use is fresh wood chips which contains bark, leaves, and wood.

Feed the Birds

Over the winter, birds will still use your plants and trees as their habitat and to help protect them from the elements. It’s important that they have access to a steady diet of food each day, so they have enough energy to stay warm overnight. Some birds, such as the tufted titmouse, will start to collect food in the fall to use over the winter. Don't forget to refill your feeders!
