A Technical Report from The Bartlett Tree Research Laboratories

Hedges provide valuable screening, green fencing and elegant architectural features in many landscapes. Maintaining hedges can be challenging since many hedge species grow rapidly. In general, there are two ways to maintain the size and shape of a hedge: formal shearing or less formal selective thinning. Selective thinning, the cutting back of individual branches, is the horticulturally preferred method. This method provides a softer, less formal appearance and a healthier plant.
