A Technical Report from The Bartlett Tree Research Laboratories

Management of mature trees must be based on an understanding of tree growth and development. As trees mature, the ratio of photosynthetic area to biomass decreases and most the energy generated in the leaves is dedicated to maintenance of existing tissues, defense, and reproduction with less energy available for growth. Mature trees are not as capable of tolerating stress or change, and are in a delicate balance with their environment.
